Topical Collection - Mermaids

Introduction

I was intrigued by the concept of a Topical collection, so I decided to try one myself. The topic I selected was Mermaids. It was really a bit of a whim because when I decided to do a Topical collection I had just acquired an NCLT coin from Palau for my One For Every Country coin collection, featuring Mermaids.

I started with a list from the American Topical Association (ATA: web site www.americantopicalassn.org) and searched for two or three years on eBay, Delcampe, HipStamp, and StampORama using several key words and phrases to find any missing items. You can get a list from ATA for Mermaids or any of many other topics by contacting them.

Challenges

There were two big challenges for me:

  1. Deciding exactly was is, and what is not, a Mermaid. It's more difficult than you might imagine!
  2. Deciding what is a postage stamp versus a Cinderella. There are several countries that have stamps issued in their name that aren't valid postage.
