Self-Authenticating Stamps

Many stamps authenticate themselves if you can get a plate number (or partial plate number) with the stamp. Some of these stamps are easy to identify without the plate numbers, but I used a plate number when feasible to self-authenticate stamps with various printers, etc. Here are the stamps in my collection that do not require a Certificate of Authenticity:

Post 4th Bureau

  • 1625 Huck Press and 1625 "B" Press - The only way to tell the difference is the gum (pebbled or smooth). Fortunately, joint line pairs only occur on the Huck Press, so I used a joint line pair to definitively identify pebbled gum so the smooth gum of the "B" Press could easily be identified.
  • 1623a and 1623Bc booklet panes - perf difference - when viewed side-by-side it's easy to see the difference in perforation gauge.
  • 2115b "D" Press - there are no plate numbers unique to D press, so you have to actually check the tagging: Wide and Tall Block tagging.
